Q. Please introduce yourself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.<\/strong> My name is Associate Professor Dr. Rachanimuk Hiransuchalert. You can call me Point. I am currently a lecturer in the Creative Science and Innovation Program, Faculty of Science, Burapha University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q. Tell us about your latest award-winning research.And what inspired you to do this research.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.<\/strong> It\u2019s the system for raising mantis shrimp in individual boxes with a recirculating water system. Let me tell you a little bit about it. When I first started working at Burapha University in 2011, I was looking for animals or organisms to experiment on for long-term research.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

One day, I went on a field trip with undergraduate students to the coast of Chao Lao, Chanthaburi province, and we surveyed the local fishermen. I observed the fishermen removing creatures from their nets after catching them from the sea, but there was one type of creature that was not removed from the net. I was curious why this creature was not removed and asked the fishermen. They told me that it was a mantis shrimp and the reason it was not removed was because this creature has very sharp spines. If you remove it from the net while it is still alive, you will be stung and injured. So, they had to let it die before removing it from the net to throw it away, because this species cannot be sold at a good price due to its small size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt that mantis shrimp might be at risk of extinction in the future if fishermen didn’t realize that this natural resource was being depleted. So, I researched existing research on mantis shrimp both domestically and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I found that very few people were interested in researching mantis shrimp. And when I looked into the possibility of increasing production in terms of aquaculture, I found that no one in the world at that time had been able to successfully cultivate mantis shrimp commercially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why I was so impressed with this aquatic animal and wanted it to continue to exist in our world and in Thailand, as mantis shrimp is a local resource of Thailand. In addition, I wanted to take the research findings back to the fishermen I first met to inspire them and show them that this creature is valuable and can be sold at a high price if we can cultivate it to a larger size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q. How does the system for raising mantis shrimp in individual boxes work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.<\/strong> This system has two main objectives. The first is to be able to raise mantis shrimp to grow larger, because we haven’t been able to do that before. The second objective is to be able to raise them anywhere, as mantis shrimp are still very much wild animals. It’s like taking a wild animal and confining it in a new environment, so we have to adjust the conditions and design the rearing system to be as close to its natural environment as possible to reduce stress.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

And to be able to raise them anywhere, we need to use a closed recirculating water system. This system doesn’t require us to bring in new water, but uses treated water that meets the standards for aquaculture and circulates it back into the system continuously, so there’s no need to change the water. This means that no matter where you are in the country or in a remote area far from the sea, you can raise mantis shrimp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q.How do you successfully cultivate mantis shrimp?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.<\/strong> To successfully cultivate aquatic animals or mantis shrimp, we need to complete the entire cycle. We need to be able to hatch, nurture, and breed them in the system we’ve designed. But this limitation has not yet been fulfilled because there are still no reports in the world of successful hatching and nurturing of mantis shrimp. The Department of Fisheries in Thailand has recognized the importance of this and has given us the opportunity to join a research team that is currently experimenting. We are currently looking for the right food to nurture mantis shrimp during their juvenile stage and then be able to put them into the rearing system we have designed.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Q. How much space is required to raise mantis shrimp?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A.<\/strong> The system is designed to support the largest mantis shrimp in the world, the spotted mantis shrimp, which is a native species of Thailand. Indonesia and Malaysia also have large mantis shrimp, but China does not have this species. That’s why China is interested in mantis shrimp and imports a large quantity from Thailand. The system that supports the raising of mantis shrimp requires a fairly large area. If you are interested in raising them, you might need to prepare an area of about 5 by 4 meters, including a system for storing seawater for each set. But if you want to set up multiple sets, you may need more space.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Q. Is the system currently used to cultivate mantis shrimp exceeding expectations?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A. <\/strong>This system is very special because the results exceed expectations. Initially, we wanted to raise mantis shrimp to double in size. So, we bought mantis shrimp larvae at a price of hundreds of baht. After two months of culturing, they doubled in size. This means we’re going to be able to increase the selling price of the mantis shrimp. For example, if we buy mantis shrimp for 500 baht per kilogram, after two months of culturing and the mantis shrimp grows larger, we can sell them for 2,500 to 3,500 baht per kilogram, depending on the size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s even more special is that some female mantis shrimp that received sperm from the wild have the opportunity to develop ovaries and become pregnant. This has never been reported in the world before, but this research has succeeded in making mantis shrimp able to carry eggs on their chest, which is the final stage of sexual maturity for mantis shrimp. It’s like a mother who is about to give birth. We can move the mother mantis shrimp to a nursery tank to incubate until they hatch. And if we succeed, it means that one mother mantis shrimp can increase the mantis shrimp population by up to 100,000.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Q.What is the current selling price of mantis shrimp in the market?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A. The price is very good right now. At the beginning of the research, the largest mantis shrimp in the world that we bought for experimentation, which was about three to four individuals per kilogram, cost around 1,000 baht. But now the price per kilogram has increased to over 3,000 baht and may reach 4,000 baht if there is high demand. Currently, there is a high demand for live mantis shrimp, especially among Chinese people who enjoy consuming live and fresh food, which has caused the price to increase to up to 4,000 baht per kilogram.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Q. Has the research been patented?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A. The research on the system for raising mantis shrimp in individual boxes with a recirculating water system has been patented. And there is another patent pending for the use of an application to assess the sexual maturity of female mantis shrimp to avoid dissecting the ovaries of the mantis shrimp, which would kill the mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
